چکیده

We describe our progress in the development of a fourth-order, finite-volume discretization of a nonlinear, full-f gyrokinetic Vlasov-Poisson system in mapped coordinates. The approach treats the configuration and velocity components of phase space on an equal footing, using a semi-discretization with limited centered fluxes combined with a fourth-order Runge Kutta integration. The algorithm has been implemented in a new code named COGENT, which is built on the Chombo Adaptive Mesh Refinement library being developed by the SciDAC APDEC project. The algorithm and code have been tested on geodesic acoustic mode problems in a standard equilibrium magnetic geometry by comparing damping rates and frequencies with those predicted by theoretical dispersion analyses. Convergence tests are also performed to verify the expected increase in accuracy as the phase space grid was refined.

An efficient numerical method for gyrokinetic δ f Vlasov simulations in helical plasmas

Three-dimensional configurations of helical plasmas bring numerical difficulties to gyrokinetic simulations of plasma turbulent transport in toroidal fusion devices. Watanabe et al. have investigated the ion-temperature-gradient (ITG)-driven turbulence in helical plasmas by means of the gyrokinetic Vlasov simulation code GVK [1]. Because of a large number of grid points along a magnetic field l...

Properties of freely decaying and driven turbulence of fusion plasmas using gyrokinetic particle simulation

In a recent work, the effects of nonlinear self-consistent profile relaxation on the ITG turbulence in global delta-f particle simulations were studied [1] using Gyrokinetic Toroidal Code (GTC) [2]. In contrast to several other gyrokinetic turbulence models, GTC shows that the turbulence is insensitive to minute or drastic profile changes and reaches the similar flux levels irrespective of whet...

Towards optimal explicit time-stepping schemes for the gyrokinetic equations

The nonlinear gyrokinetic equations describe plasma turbulence in laboratory and astrophysical plasmas. To solve these equations, massively parallel codes are developed and run on present-day supercomputers. The goal of this paper is to improve the efficiency of such computations, thereby allowing for physically more comprehensive studies. Explicit Runge-Kutta schemes are considered to be well ...

Numerically stable method for kinetic electrons in gyrokinetic particle-in-cell simulation of toroidal plasmas

The direct implicit method with a second-order implicit integration scheme is formulated for and applied to the electron parallel nonlinearity in global electrostatic gyrokinetic particle-in-cell simulations of toroidal fusion plasmas. The method shows improved numerical accuracy and stability properties compared to the direct implicit method with a first-order integration scheme. The conservat...
